Angela Chao's Bio:

As a leader of business, esteemed speaker in global commerce, and an engaged philanthropist in her community, Angela Chao has gained respect in all the spheres in which she is active.   The youngest of six daughters, Angela has always valued the role of family in her life. Coming from a family of immigrants to the United States who came with nothing but succeeded in making a better life for themselves, Angela was raised with the values of committing oneself to the task ahead, and that education is key to achievement.   Angela Chao studied economics at Harvard College, where she finished her degree in just three years, graduating magna cum laude. When she completed her studies, she entered into the field of finance in the Mergers and Acquisitions department at the investment bank, Smith Barney. Looking to further her education, Angela attended Harvard Business School, where she earned her Masters in Business Administration. She maintains her relationship with Harvard Business School, sitting on its Board of Dean's Advisors.   Having benefited from the institutions of higher learning, Angela has made a significant effort to help others in need. Her parents, James S.C. Chao and his late wife Ruth Mulan Chu Chao have been instrumental in the founding of a number of philanthropic projects that Angela has involved herself in. She serves as a trustee for the Foremost Foundation, which focuses its giving towards programs for education, improving cooperation and understanding between America and China, as well as medical research. In hopes of providing more opportunities for students in both America and China, Angela serves as the Honorary Chairperson of the Chiao-Tung University Alumni Association in America, and on the board of the Shanghai Mulan Education Foundation. This foundation was formed in 1984 by her parents and was one of the first private foundations in China; the foundation is named after Angela’s mother, Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, who was an outspoken advocate for the importance of education.   Having grown up in the United States but with strong roots in her Chinese heritage, Angela has striven to take steps to improve the ties between the two countries. She has played an active role in this effort, donating her time and efforts to the organizations on whose boards she sits or has served, including The Asia American Foundation, the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, the Young Leaders Forum of the National Committee on US-China Relations, the China State Shipbuilding Corporation and previously the Lincoln Center Global China Advisory Council.   Angela Chao now holds the position of the Chair and CEO for Foremost Group, an international maritime and finance company that leads the industry in their commitment to high standards and environmental safety practices.   Recognized for her business acumen, as well as the depth of her insights in the world of shipping and Sino-American relations, Angela has been called upon to speak at various conferences across Europe, Asia, and North America.
